Pontefract Racecourse
At two miles in circumference, 'Ponte' is the longest 'enclosed' racecourse in the country (Newmarket's Rowley Mile course stretches to include the two-and-a-quarter mile Cesarewitch but that does not loop around) and the full extent of that area is used in the two-and-three-quarter mile Marathon Handicap in April.
Pontefract's meetings used to begin at 2.45pm to give miners from the local colliers time to make it to the races, but with the lack of mines left in West Yorkshire, that little piece of tradition has fallen by the wayside.
