Cartmel Racecourse
Set in the heart of the Lake District, Cartmel is a unique racecourse but up until the early 60s there was just the Spring Bank Holiday raceday for punters. However, the programme has grown and covered six days in 2004, mainly based around various Bank Holidays.
To add to the festive spirit, the course takes on a carnival feel for its meetings, with jockeys and trainers rubbing shoulders with locals and tourists, stall handlers and fairground rides.
Although a jumping racecourse, Cartmel's season fits between May and August with the frenetic action taking place just a few feet from the majority of its large crowd.
