FOBT NEWS ARCHIVE
The Gaming Board is at loggerheads with a software provider over the legality of an internet terminal currently being operated in a London arcade.
The terminal, developed by Contented Kiosks, allows customers to transfer money into e-cash to spend on a range of online services including gaming using an off-shore site.
The Gaming Board's Cliff Young said "I can confirm that we have met with the owner of the premises where the machine is sited along with a representative of the supplier and their legal representative. Following discussions of the latter's legal opinion the Board is of the view that the operation of this machine involves the organising and management of gaming and that gaming is taking place on the premises. Therefore the Board is of the view that the continued operation of the machine involves offences under the 1968 Gaming Act.
Contented Kiosks' legal adviser, Kevin de Haan, is of the opinion that the internet kiosk is not a gaming machine under the 1968 Act and argues that under the DCMS's own stated position that internet gaming happens at the server level and not where the customers sit, which the company contends comprehensively removes all internet gaming from the jurisdiction of the Gaming Board.
Gaming & Entertainment Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Gaming & Entertainment Group Inc. and developer of central-server gaming systems and downloadable games, has forged an agreement with Electrocoin to develop a range of video-based gaming machines for deployment in the UK and European market.
Electrocoin will be the manufacturer and distributor, while Gaming & Entertainment Group will provide its central-server software platform and library of existing and future games, according to a news release. The two companies will share in the revenues and profits derived from the placement of these products.
The initial product range, which was introduced in the London area recently, includes a suite of video poker games for the Amusement With Prizes (AWP) sector, followed by the release of a specially developed low-cost Fixed Odds Betting Terminal (FOBT) for use in UK licensed betting offices.
"We are delighted to formalize our partnership with Electrocoin," said Tibor Vertes, CEO of Gaming & Entertainment Group. "Electrocoin is one of the UK's market leaders in the gaming machine industry. We have spent 12 months developing a brand-new software platform to power the new products, while Electrocoin has developed a complementary range of cabinets and kiosks that are manufactured locally in the UK."
There are approximately 300,000 AWP machines throughout the UK in arcades, clubs and pubs. FOBT's are installed in licensed betting offices and offer a range of casino-style games including roulette and keno.
