Brit Bets his Life

A Buckinghamshire, England resident has brought new meaning to the phrase “You Bet Your Life”. Jon Matthews, a UK resident diagnosed in 2006 with mesothelioma cancer to whom Doctors then gave only months to live, recently won the second of what are, thus far, three bets on his life expectancy.

The first bet Matthews made, a £ 100 wager placed in April of 2006, was on his being alive June 1st, 2008. After cashing out his winnings on that bet, Matthews established two new bets. The first of the new was on his making it to June 1st, 2009 (a bet he recently won); the second, on living to June 1st, 2010. All the bets have been made via one of William Hill’s betting agencies.

A William Hill representative noted that the company had never heard of nor taken a bet of this nature. The representative added, however, that the company is thrilled to be paying it out.
