Kentucky Derby Winner Yields Big Payday

Horse racing hasn’t been the hit among online gamblers that web sportsbooks had hoped it would. The relatively low payout is the oft-cited reason. As one online slots fan put it; “Horse racing usually seems so frustrating, to win a battle against multiple opponents and then get paid even money or such.” But all that may soon change.

Last week’s Kentucky Derby saw Mine that Bird, a nearly forgotten entrant whose 50/1 odds made it a literal “dark horse”, finish first among a field of 19 horses in a come-from-behind win that shocked all horse bettors and delighted some. 50/1 odds meant that for every $100 bet, $8,000 would be paid. In the entire history of the Kentucky Derby, Mine that Bird’s payout rate is second only to 1913’s Donerail.

The win was an exercise in stamina and strategy. Calvin Borel, Mine That Bird’s Jockey, allowed almost every horse to pass then shot along the inside rail in the final stretch. The goal was to take the shortest route between the gate and finish line in order to reserve Mine That Bird’s strength and overpower the field in the end. Sportsbetting industry veterans suspect the big payday will give horseracing bets a boost.
