EPT Monte Carlo Champion Crowned
The annual EPT Monte Carlo came to a close yesterday with a young, fairly unknown Dutch player claiming its top spot. Peter de Korver, a 26-year-old online poker player whose pro career commenced only two years ago, took home the event’s 1st place prize of 2.3 million Euro.
Event observers filed into the Salle des Etoiles at the Sporting Club in Monte Carlo to watch de Korver beat out 934 other contenders in his quest for the title, a victory that was not a foregone conclusion. At the final table, de Korver mounted a come-from-behind challenge that surprised spectators and upset participants. Norwegian player, Dag Martin Mikkelson, who at one point, held a chip lead of more than 11 million was handed a disappointing fourth place finish after de Korver leveraged a series of excellent game hands to move into first position.
Says de Korver; "I was loving the atmosphere and enjoying playing cards. I had a little bit of luck and I won. That's the best part of poker."
