UK government could regulate offshore gambling sites
The online gambling industry in the UK could be about to see a change as the government is planning for further regulation of offshore gambling Web sites that are aimed at players in the UK. Whereas many offshore gambling Web sites, including online casinos, are currently operating quite freely, they could soon require a license in order to operate.
The Sports Minister, Gerry Sutcliffe, said that operators that targeted players in the UK would need to be granted a license by the Gambling Commission in order to target players in the UK. They would also have to comply with UK laws and the Gambling Act.
This would involve reporting suspicious betting activity to the Gambling Commission, and sticking to requirements of the license including protecting children and demonstrating how they would contribute to the treatment of problem gambling. Any operators that take bets on horseracing in the UK would also have to pay the Horserace Betting Levy, which is the fund that supports racing in the UK.
In a written statement, Sutcliffe said “British gamblers form one of the largest customer bases for online gambling in the EU,” adding that “change is necessary to ensure the protections in the Gambling Act […] continue to be afforded to British consumers.”
