Rank chief executive calls for change in UK tax laws
Rank, which is the owner of online gambling site Mecca Bingo, has called on the UK government to change the gambling tax laws in the country because they are currently unfair. There has been a lot of talk recently about the unfair tax system that gambling operators are forced into, and now the chief executive of the group, Ian Burke, has called for real action.
He said that “the gaming and betting activities of UK consumers are subject to a patchwork quilt of taxation,” claiming that the laws were “without any apparent logic or relationship to social policy." He is calling for a flat rate of tax of 15 percent across all gambling activities to simplify the system and make it fairer.
The system currently incorporates a number of different tax regimes for bingo, casinos, sports betting, and other forms of gambling and online gambling. Casinos pay the highest tax rate at 22 percent. However, there was slight relief recently when the tax on bingo operators was dropped to 20 percent.
Burke highlighted how unfair it is that the offshore betting industry doesn't pay any tax. He was especially frustrated because although Rank saw pre-tax profits rise 20 percent to £48.5 million last year, which was better than expected, the high tax rate hit its operating level.
