Petition launched demanding more liberal EU gaming market
Right2Bet is a petition that is calling on the European Union to introduce more liberal online gambling laws. The campaign has been launched to counter the way in which certain European Union countries are only allowing state-run gambling operations within their borders.
The petition focuses on the Citizens Initiative of the Lisbon Treaty. This states that if a petition of one million signatures is submitted, the Parliament of the European Union has to act upon it. The aim is to get the EU to prevent countries from restricting gambling to their own state-run companies and to allow operators from other countries to access their markets.
Although countries such as Spain and Italy do have more liberal gambling markets, other countries such as Portugal only allow state-run online casinos and online gambling operations. Americans are also being encouraged to add their names to the petition as it could send a message to their own government.
A statement from Right2Bet said that the objective of the petition is to “ensure that the principles of economic freedom in the European Union are applied as fairly to betting and gaming as they are to any other sector.”
