Online bingo back on in Italy
Online bingo has been permitted once again in Italy following a few weeks during which it was banned in the country. This had been a blow to online gambling operators such as Playtech who will now be waiting to see how the situation develops over the next few weeks.
Online bingo was launched in Italy at the end of December 2009, but it was suspended soon after by an administrative court in Lazio. The court ruled that the decrees that regulate online bingo were not compliant with Italian law, and almost as soon as online bingo had been launched in the country it had to be put on hold.
Following this, the Administrative Court of Appeal has just ordered the suspension of the decision, meaning that, for now at least, online bingo can continue as normal in Italy. But its future remains uncertain: It can only carry on for definite until March 23 when the next hearing will take place. What happens after that is anyone’s guess.
Italy is the biggest online gambling market in the whole of Europe, and it is clear that there are rich pickings to be had in the online bingo market. Playtech is just one of the operators which are set to enter the online bingo market in Italy, with big names like Bwin and Partygaming also attracted to the scene.
