Germany could see end to online gambling ban

The online gambling ban in Germany could be coming to an end. One of the 16 states that make up Germany has just cancelled its approval for the new treaty that it had previously agreed to recently. Schleswig-Holstein state in the north of the country is now calling for an end to the ban. The news was revealed in a recent report by EGamingReview.

The current legislation on online gambling in Germany is called the Interstate Treaty on Gambling. This currently prevents the majority of online gambling in the country. Germany claims that the best protection for consumers is through a monopolistic system, and the only form of online betting that is allowed is horse racing. Many claim that this is in direct violation of EU law.

The current agreement was recently published to provide new regulation of online gambling in Germany. It was agreed upon between the Christian-Demographic Party (CDU) and the Liberal Party (FDP).

Jürgen Koppelin, the FDP leader, said that if new regulation could not be agreed upon following the cancelled approval of Schleswig-Holstein state, a new licensing system would be introduced. If the new regulation is not ratified by 2012, then it will not be able to be enforced and online gambling in Germany could become legalized.
