Danish man ordered to pay $28,000 in poker winnings

The Copenhagen Post has reported that a 35-year-old man from Denmark has been ordered by the Supreme Court to forfeit 194,000 kroner ($28,000), his complete poker winnings for the whole year.

Although online gambling is legal in Denmark, it is illegal to gamble professionally. As the man was unemployed for over a year and made all his money from poker, he was deemed to have broken the law.

This is the second such case to arise in Denmark this year. Back in June another man was found guilty of organizing poker tournaments. In that case the verdict was eventually overturned, but on this occasion the fee will have to be paid.

An estimated 50,000 people play online poker in Denmark, and some of them are certain to be earning a lot of money. Denmark has been quick to clarify that online gaming is not itself illegal, with the Crown Prosecutor Svend Larsen stating that it will be decided “on a case-by-case basis” as to whether a player is gambling professionally.
