Chinese crack down on online gambling
Online gambling in China is set to encounter some serious opposition after the government announced a crackdown on online casinos and illegal gambling operations. The government recently made a statement on its official Web site promising to come down hard on anyone involved in online gambling. And when the Chinese government promises to take action, they usually mean it.
The statement on the Web site said that the government will “concentrate on investigating major and important cases of online gambling,” as well as aiming to “knock out domestic and foreign groups that organize online gambling.” It also made the stark promise to “severely punish” anyone involved, which is likely to strike fear into the hearts of anyone who may be affected.
Gambling has been banned in China for decades, but that does not stop it running a state-run lottery. But the hard line on gambling has just made online gambling increasingly popular, and it is this which the government is now keen to repress.
China will now target players at online casinos and online poker rooms as well as the operators themselves, wherever they are based. It will also punish payment processors who are involved in online gambling. It remains to be seen how online casinos based outside of China will react.
